Dear Union School District Families and Staff,

This week, the California Department of Public Health updated its COVID-19 Public Health Guidance for K–12 Schools to Support Safe In-Person Learning, 2022–2023 School Year.

With student and staff safety as our highest priority, the district continues to follow all COVID guidance recommended by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH.)

The following changes will affect our school procedures effective immediately and align with the CDPH’s guidance for the general public.

Isolation Procedures After Testing Positive

When an individual tests positive for COVID-19, they must still isolate for 5 days from their positive test result or date of symptom onset, whichever came first. DAY ZERO is the date of positive test or symptom onset.

An individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 may end isolation and return to school or work AFTER DAY 5 if:
  • they feel well,
  • have improving symptoms,
  • and are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication.

Families or staff will not be required to submit proof of a negative test on days 6-10. They may return beginning on Day 6, if they feel well, have improving symptoms, and have been fever free for 24 hours, without medication.

Masking Guidance After Testing Positive

Anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19, and ends isolation on Days 6 through 10, should mask until day 10. However, after ending isolation (with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and symptoms are improving), students may remove their mask sooner than Day 10 with two sequential negative tests at least one day apart.

Per Cal OSHA requirements, staff and volunteers on campus may return after day 5 with the same isolation guidance above, but are expected to wear a mask the remaining days through Day 10.

Please continue to report positive cases to your school office. Our District health staff will provide you with specific return-to-school or work instructions.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to keep our schools and communities safe and healthy. If you or a student has tested positive and you have any questions regarding returning to work or school, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Kris Suzuki
