Intergenerational Cooking Events with Belmont Residents

 This year, Union Middle School Leadership students and our neighbors at Belmont Village teamed up for an intergenerational cookbook project that went way beyond a typical history lesson. As USD students interviewed Belmont residents, students learned about favorite childhood foods and heard firsthand stories about recipes residents cherished from decades ago. They heard about everything from the specific smells of an old-fashioned kitchen to the major world events happening at the time.

Beyond the interviews, the two groups joined together for live cooking demonstrations and even prepared some of the special recipes. These sessions showed our students that a rich history is right here in our community. Seeing the two groups working side-by-side was a great reminder that no matter how much time passes, food and conversation still bring people together.
